Issues Confronting the Great Lakes.
Jeanette Neagu from the Lake Michigan Inter-League Organization will be the speaker. Her Power Point presentation will address the problems facing the Great Lakes in the Twenty-First Century. Major issues include, loss of Wetlands; Invasive Alien Species that enter the Lakes through the discharge of Untreated ballast water from ocean-going ships; The release of millions of gallons of untreated discharge by Sanitary Districts, and contaminated sediments in the sands of the Great Lakes. Another issues is the threat that Great Lakes waters will be transported out of the Watershed to meet the needs for fresh water from those who live beyond the basin. Does Illinois Need a Constitutional Convention?.
Next November's ballot will ask us to vote for or against a Constitutional convention. The LWVIL must take a consensus vote among the leagues before it begins the process of educating the citizens of Illinois. We have set aside the evening of April 1st to debate the many pros and cons of having a Constitutional Convention. Come join us for a spirited and engaging debate!
